I looked for quotes on living an easy life and at the end, I was ready to call my therapist. The quotes ran something like this…
LIFE MUST BE DIFFICULT.
IT DOESN’T COUNT IF IT’S EASY.
I MUST STRUGGLE. THEN I’VE LIVED A MEANINGFUL LIFE.
Oy vey. I mean, sure, if you want to claw and scratch your way through this existence, plenty of opportuniies will present themselves. However, the other choice is acknowledging all of the struggles from which you’ve learned — and then use them as leverage for an easy life. Confucius says…
Don’t believe writers who say that you have to struggle with your art, slaving away over pages. Again, it’s always a choice — but I have lots more fun when writing from a place of ease. My new book is the most challenging I’ve ever written — but my characters make me bust out laughing in yoga, the grocery store and I’m eager to get back to my notebooks. I can’t wait to hear what they have to say. I hope the reverberation of my laughter runs through the entire book.
I waited two years to start writing again. Forcing a work means it limps to the finish line. I’d rather be in the flow and then give the emerging story my total, joyful curiosity than “I have to do this because I’m a writer and need to get a new book out before people forget me”.
Make it simple.
