On my morning walk today, I thought about free will and how it affects every Tarot reading I do, whether for a client or my own life.
Free will — the choice you or another makes — changes everything in the cards. The reading you get is a snapshot of potentials. It’s similar to craving sushi all day — you want it, you need it for dinner — and then you start the car, head out and realize you’d rather have a juicy burger. It changes everything but you still get a yummy meal in the end.
It’s easy to fixate on what we think we want — a certain person, position, amount of money. The beauty of free will, combined with faith — is that you get what you need in the end (kind of like that old Rolling Stones song…). Maybe you won’t get that partner you love and can’t live without — since they’re unavailable for numerous reasons. Your free will remains to choose thoughts that are positive and loving in regards to your life. I use the Florence Scovel Schinn phrase, “This or something better”, so that I’m not caught in a karmic tug-of-war with the one person/position/amount of money that I believe I deserve. It brings a sense of ease to the situation and trust that the Divine will provide me with exactly what I need. This, or something better.
There are reasons why things don’t work out, even though the cards may seem positive at the time. Unfinished karmic work for you or the other person. Learning lessons about money or gratitude or giving to the world. The other person’s free will to choose differently than you expect. Lots of reasons — but it doesn’t mean that you (or your reader) are wrong. It means that life offers a plethora of choices – and it’s a wonderful thing. Usually hindsight gives us the perspective that we lack in the moment of frustration.
Free will is just that. The freedom to direct our will to the best possible outcome — that provides even more freedom in the choices that we make for our lives.
